LCL Shipping: Benefits, Disadvantages & How It Works

Are you looking for an efficient and cost-effective way to ship your goods internationally? Consider LCL (Less than Container Load) shipping as your logistics solution. On this page, we’ll cover everything you need to know about LCL shipping. From its benefits and process to why it might be the right choice for your transportation needs.

What is LCL Shipping?

LCL stands for “Less than Container Load,” meaning your goods don’t fill an entire container but instead are part of a combined shipment with goods from other shippers. This is why it’s sometimes referred to as consolidation container shipping. It’s a flexible and cost-effective way to ship smaller quantities of goods internationally.

Advantages of LCL Shipping

LCL shipping offers multiple advantages that can optimize your international transport:

Cost Savings: The cost per cubic meter is typically higher for partial shipments than for full container loads. Loads. However, if you have smaller shipments, the total cost for LCL can be much lower. You only pay for the space your goods occupy, allowing you to save costs compared to shipping a full container.

Flexible Quantity: LCL shipping accommodates shipments of various sizes, making it ideal for small- to medium-sized businesses that do not frequently ship large volumes of goods.

Global Reach: With LCL shipping, you can access global markets without the need to hire a full container.

These advantages have one downside. Because the goods need to be consolidated, LCL transport often takes longer than FCL transport.

How LCL Shipping Works

The process of Less than Container Load shipping is straightforward:

  1. Pickup of Goods: Your goods are picked up from your location and gathered with other shipments at a central warehouse.
  2. Consolidation: All partial shipments are combined into one container for shipping.
  3. Shipping: The full container is shipped to its destination.
  4. Unloading and Distribution: Upon arrival, goods are unloaded from the container and transported to their final destinations.

Our Own Consolidation Containers

We have our own consol containers from the main ports in China to Rotterdam. We do not unload these containers in the Rotterdam warehouses but in the Twente region.

This setup has several advantages. It allows us to deliver quickly after unloading and provides cost savings, quicker turnaround times, reduced risk of damage, and better control over the shipping process.

LCL Container Costs

Exact LCL shipping costs vary frequently. Ocean freight rates depend on factors like the type of goods, the distance between departure and arrival ports, the chosen shipping line, seasonal influences, and any additional services you need. For this reason, our ocean freight rates are never fixed.

Our pricing method, however, remains consistent. We calculate based on volume/weight, so you only pay for the space you use. This measurement factor bridges the gap between volume (space) and weight, as one cubic meter of lead, for example, weighs much more than a cubic meter of feathers. In LCL ocean freight, we assume that one cubic meter is equivalent to 1,000 kilograms.
