Intermodal transport

Are you looking for a partner to help with intermodal transport within or outside of Europe? You’ve come to the right place. At Kuipers Logistics, we use, among other things, the daily train connection between the Netherlands, Austria, and Italy. In this intermodal transport, our trailer is loaded onto the train with a crane.

What is Intermodal Transport?

Intermodal freight transport refers to the transportation of goods from point A to point B using multiple types of transport modes without the goods being reloaded. For example, in intermodal transport, a trailer can be loaded onto a ship or train to be transported from A to B.

What is multimodal transport?

Multimodal transport is transport between different modalities (road transport, sea freight, air freight or rail transport) whereby the goods, in contrast to intermodal transport, are transshipped between the different modalities. Multimodal transport is a common form of transport, especially in intercontinental transport movements. At our Air&Sea department we make extensive use of multimodal transport, both for sea freight, air freight and rail transport. Enquire about the possibilities!

What is the Difference Between Multimodal and Intermodal Transport?

Intermodal transport is a form of multimodal transport in which the goods are not unloaded between different modes of transport. Instead, the trailer, sea container, or swap body containing the goods is transferred as a whole to the other mode of transport. For example, a sea container can be transferred from a ship to a truck for delivery to its final destination.

Rail transport within Europe

There are currently many rail connections within Europe, equipped for both trailers and containers, depending on the route. Previously, the rail was only attractive for longer distances, but nowadays you can increasingly use the rail for shorter distances, such as the Betuwe line. But, we also use  various other connections within Europe. Like the daily connections bestween the Netherlands, Austria and Italy. Would you like to know whether there is a suitable rail connection for you, please feel free to contact the intermodal team of Kuipers Logistics.

Intermodal Transport to Italy

As a specialist in Italy transport, Kuipers Logistics offers a fast and reliable intermodal connection between the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, using our own equipment. Our daily train services provide:

  • Fast transit times
  • Reliable transportation
  • Savings on toll and fuel surcharges
  • CO2 reduction by minimizing road transport
This makes intermodal transport ideal for large volumes.

Advantages intermodal transport

Choosing intermodal transport comes with numerous advantages:

  • Sustainable transportation – Reducing road transport lowers CO2 emissions. Trucks are primarily used for the ‘first mile’ and ‘last mile,’ decreasing total mileage per shipment.
  • Cost savings – Utilizing more efficient transport modes such as rail and sea can significantly reduce toll and fuel costs.
  • Reduced road congestion – Fewer trucks on the road ease the strain on highways and traffic hubs, contributing to less congestion.

Our intermodal solutions not only help lower your logistics costs but also contribute to a more sustainable supply chain. We can assess whether intermodal transport is a suitable solution for your products and freight flows. Feel free to ask about the possibilities.
