Types of Transport Documents

Each mode of transport has its own transport document. For road transport, it’s the CMR; for sea freight, it’s the Bill of Lading; for air freight, it’s the Air Waybill; and for rail transport, it’s the CIM. However, we only handle rail transport as part of intermodal transport. Below, we briefly explain all the transport documents.

CMR – Transport Document for International Road Transport

A CMR is required whenever goods are transported internationally by road.

What is a CMR? A CMR, or CMR Waybill, is a waybill that complies with the guidelines of the international CMR Convention. It is the standard waybill for the international transport of goods by road. The convention is an agreement between European countries and some countries outside Europe regarding the legal rules governing road freight transport. Bill of Lading – Transport Document for Ocean Freight

What is a Bill of Lading? B/L stands for Bill of Lading. This transport document is used for sea transport and inland navigation and is also referred to as a consignment note.

A Bill of Lading differs from other transport documents as it also serves as a document of title. The party holding the original document is the owner of the goods. The recipient can only receive the cargo if they present this original document. If an original document is released at the origin, it is referred to as a Telex Release B/L or Surrender.

“Do not confuse a B/L with a Sea Waybill,” says Wouter Engbersen from our Air & Sea department. “The B/L indicates ownership and thus gives you control over your cargo. A Sea Waybill is just a regular transport document. It serves as a transport receipt and acknowledgment of receipt. Therefore, you are not the owner of the cargo. Additionally, the B/L gives the paying bank a lien and security. The Sea Waybill does not play a role in the payment process,” he emphasizes.

CIM – Transport Document for International Rail Transport

In international rail transport, the international railway waybill CIM is used. It outlines the agreements between the carrier and sender. CIM stands for ‘Contrat de Transport International ferroviaire des Marchandises.’

Air Waybill – Transport Document for Air Freight

When goods are transported by air, the transport document used is the Air Waybill (AWB). The AWB is a standard document from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
