The Air Waybill functions as a receipt issued by the airline or carrier. It acts as a contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier and as a tracking document that ensures the goods can be followed during transport. Besides that, it contains detailed shipment information, including origin, destination, weight, and contents, making it a vital part of any international air shipment.

Why is an Air Waybill important?

The Air Waybill is often compared to the Bill of Lading in sea freight or the CMR in road transport. While these transport documents share similar purposes, only the Bill of Lading functions as a document of title. The Air Waybill does not, but it plays several essential roles:

• Proof of Receipt – confirms goods have been handed over to the airline

What information s on an Air Waybill?

A standard Air Waybill includes the following information:

• Name and address of the shipper
• Name and address of the consignee (receiver)
• Airport codes for the origin and destination (three-letter IATA codes)
• Declared customs value
• Quantity, gross weight, and description of the goods
• Any special handling instructions, such as “perishable”

This data ensures that the shipment is processed correctly and reaches the destination without unnecessary delays.
