Driving Bans in Italy

Italy, like many other European countries, has its own regulations concerning holidays, driving bans, and other legal rules related to road transport. These can affect the transit time of your transport to Italy. This page provides all the information regarding the driving bans in Italy.

Please note that this information has been compiled with great care. However, we are mostly dependent on third parties for the majority of the information. Additionally, driving bans may sometimes be announced later due to unforeseen circumstances, such as roadworks. Therefore, it’s possible that the list below is not complete.

Furthermore, driving bans in other countries, such as driving bans in Germany and Austria, may also impact the transit time.

In general, Italy has a driving ban for trucks with a permissible total weight of 7.5 tons or more on holidays and Sundays between 9:00 AM and 10:00 PM. During the summer months (June through September), this driving ban applies from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Additionally, there is also a driving ban on Saturdays in the summer months. The dates for these bans are typically announced in the spring.

Exceptions to Italy’s Driving Bans

Several exceptions apply to these driving bans in Italy. For instance, the driving ban may vary depending on the destination in Italy and where the truck is coming from. Below are the main exceptions:

  • Vehicles from abroad with the correct documentation can receive a four-hour extension to the driving ban.
  • For vehicles traveling to foreign countries, the driving ban begins two hours earlier.
  • Vehicles traveling to Sardinia must stop driving four hours earlier.
  • For vehicles from Sardinia, the driving ban begins four hours later.
  • For vehicles traveling to or from Sicily by ferry, similar exceptions apply, depending on the port used.
  • For vehicles heading to national intermodal terminals such as Bari, Bologna, Catania, Cervignano (UD), Jesi (AN), Livorno, Marcianise (CE), Nola (NA), Novara, Orte (VT), Padua, Parma, Pescara, Prato, Rivalta Scrivia (AL), Turin, Vado Ligure (SV), Venice, and Verona, and strategically located intermodal terminals like Busto Arsizio (VA), Domodossola (VB), Marzaglia (MO), Melzo (MJ), Milan sorting center, Mortara (PV), Portogruaro (VE), Rovigo, Rubiera (RE), Trento, Trieste, and Voltri (GE), if they are transporting goods to foreign destinations, the driving ban ends four hours earlier.
  • Intermodal transport, such as road-sea transport, may have exceptions depending on the nature of the cargo and documentation.
  • Various government vehicles and vehicles providing essential services, such as police, fire, and medical services, are exempt from the driving bans.
  • Vehicles transporting specific goods, such as medical products or perishables, may also be exempt.
  • Permits for deviations from the driving bans can be requested from the prefecture, depending on specific needs and circumstances.

ADR Driving Ban in Italy

The general driving ban in Italy also applies to the transport of hazardous materials, regardless of the total weight, on all the previously mentioned Sundays, holidays, and busy days. Additionally, there is an extra driving ban from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM every Saturday and from 12:00 AM to 12:00 PM every Sunday from May 24 to September 7, 2024. Information for 2025 is yet to be finalized, but it will likely be similar.

Exceptions to ADR Driving Ban in Italy

Once again, there are exceptions that may apply. These are largely limited to the transport of military explosives. There are also exceptions for Class 7 goods needed urgently in the healthcare sector.
